Why do the training?
Domestic abuse is not a private issue - it's a community concern that affects millions of lives and infiltrates every part of society, including the workplace.
The Bigger Picture
Recent figures from the National Crime Survey (March 2024) reveal that:
1 in 4 adults in England and Wales have experienced abusive behaviours by a partner or family member since the age of 16.
1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men have suffered abuse.
Emotional abuse affects 18% of adults, while 12% have experienced economic abuse.
Over 75% of domestic homicide victims were women.
These statistics are more than numbers, they are real people, often silently suffering in our homes, communities, and workplaces.
The Workplace Impact
Domestic abuse doesn’t stop at the front door.
More than 1 in 10 survivors say the abuse continued at work, often through harassing emails or calls.
47% report being stalked or confronted at their workplace.
Abuse impacts performance, punctuality, attendance and tragically, 1 in 50 working women lose their jobs due to abuse.
The estimated cost to UK businesses is £17 billion a year in lost productivity and time off work.
For many, work is the only place they feel safe. Employers and colleagues are in a unique position to spot the signs, offer support, and protect staff.
Your Responsibility as an Employer
Businesses with 5 or more employees are expected to have a Domestic Abuse Policy.
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act, employers have a duty of care to protect staff.
Employees disclosing domestic abuse should be safeguarded, not penalised, and may be entitled to additional leave to access support.
New legislation will reinforce that staff must not suffer detriment at work after disclosing abuse.
